Subject: DALnet-Services: Temporary Expiration Moratorium
Date: Sun, 12 Jan 2003 23:42:20 -0500
Due to the limited availability of servers, DALnet has enacted a
temporary expiration moratorium. Registered nicks and channels will
not expire for non-usage in the immediate future. When DALnet returns
to a more stable state, the expiration process will be put back
into effect. Please do not abuse this extra time by registering
nicks or channels you will not use on a regular basis.
Thanks,

DALnet
Update
1/13/2003
|
Friends,
The
Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks continue to cause
us problems on DALnet. Though there are times that we can't
connect to a server this is still far better than our experiences
on the wild frontier, EFnet. Those of you that may feel the
urge to complain and encourage folks to move to another network
should go spend some time on EFnet to get a feel for why we
moved to DALnet in the first place and to understand why the
services offered on DALnet are the best available. Running
from the intentional attacks here will give the attackers
exactly what they are wanting. This is cyber terrorism and
will always haunt the better run nets. We will stay here on
DALnet and weather the storm.

DALnet
Update
8/19/2002
DALnet-services mail list
To: dalnet-services@DAL.NET
Subject: DALnet-Services: Services Security Changes (Phase I)
Date: Mon, 19 Aug 2002 00:24:04 -0400
Importance: Normal
As many of you are aware, the number of stolen nick and channel
cases has been growing recently. While the final responsibility
still lies with the user, we are working to limit the number of
ways that users can be taken advantage of. DALnet recently made
significant changes to the way services handles certain settings.
These changes have been applied to nicknames only. We will be evaluating
whether or not to enable the same systems for channels as well.
SET PASSWD - Upon a successful password change, users will be sent
a confirmation email to the address on file notifying them of a
password change. No passwords will be included in the email. It
is simply a way to know that a password has been changed. If you
did not issue the change, you will be aware of it and may have time
to take action to prevent further damage.
SET MAILBLOCK ON - Use of this command now requires email authorization,
similar to the registration authorization system. An authorization
code will be sent to the address on file. The user must enter the
authorization code online or use the web system in order to confirm
the MAILBLOCK request.
DROP - The drop authorization code that was previously supplied
online is now sent to the email address on file. The user must enter
the authorization code online or use the web system in order to
confirm the DROP request. Additionally, there are further changes
scheduled for Phase II of this project. They include a mandatory
delay between SET PASSWD/SET EMAIL requests. Also, the SET EMAIL
system will have a way for the user to cancel the request if they
did not issue it. More information on Phase II of the project will
be issued when it is completed.

DALnet
Update
8/14/2002
from alt.irc.dalnet
Recently many people have noticed it has been increasingly difficult
to connect to the DALnet chat network. In an attempt to keep communications
open with our users, we offer this explanation.
IRC networks like DALnet have a history of being the unwilling
participants for tests of new denial of service attack tools. This
past week has been no exception. During the attacks users will find
that the network will not be as responsive as it normally is.. this
will effect the connections to the network as well as people who
are already connected.
As DALnet works through this round of attacks we appreciate your
patience and patronage. Please refrain from speculation about the
attacks or trying to confront people who you believe are behind
it. If you have information to offer, please use this web form to
submit it to us:

Today, October

TERRORISTS
ATTACK
USA!
September 11, 2001
911
Terrorists
hijacked two American Airlines flights and two United Airlines flights.
They proceeded to crash one of each into the New York City World
Trade Center Towers causing the towers to burn and collapse killing
THOUSANDS of innocent civilian. The terrorists also crashed one
of the American Airlines flights into the Pentagon killing many
of the workers there. The second United Airlines flight was en route
to Washington, DC when apparently civilian passenger heroes attempted
to take the jet back from the hijackers and the jet crashed in a
sparsely populated area of Pennsylvania; probably saving thousands
of other lives or perhaps saving the White House or the United States
Capitol.
Our
hearts pour out to the families and friends of the victims of the
terrorist attacks on the New York City World Trade Center, the Pentagon,
American Airlines and United Airlines flights, and the workers that
have died in the rescue attempts. We condemn the terrorists, their
activities and all countries that condone and protect them. We will
not rest until they have been brought to justice.
The sleeping giant is awake...

Hi Everyone,

Hey all,
Two new services features released this evening:
First, you can set a separate password for your channels'
channels.dal.net web site. This way a founder can delegate web access to a
friend without giving out the channel's founder password. For more info,
use:
/ChanServ HELP SET WEBPASSWD
Next, you can set a successor to your channel. If you disappear for a
while and your nick expires, instead of the channel dropping, ownership will
simply pass on to the successor. All access lists, bans and channel settings
will be transferred seamlessly. For more info on this one, use:
/ChanServ HELP SET SUCCESSOR
enjoy!
-dalnet services team
****************************************************
Here is a list of changes we've made to services ...
- NickServ ACCESS lists now match() the IP address you are logged on with as
well. If you logon as nick!user@somehost.isp.com (IP: 10.20.20.1) and have
*@10.20.20.* in your access list, you will be set ACC 2.
- ChanServ AOP/SOP/AKICK lists now match() IP addresses too. The same as
above, you can now aop/sop/akick IPs and users with a resolved hostname will
be given that access.
- Due to previous limitations, when a ChanServ UNBAN was issued, sometimes
we needed the server to set -b and remove the ban(s). This was confusing to
some people, thinking it was desynch or an SAMODE. I've moved back to the
system where ChanServ always sets MODE -b when using the UNBAN command
instead of the server issuing the MODE -b.

Here is a list of topics that do *not* need discussion:
* User SENDPASS ability [this is on the immediate to-do list and should be
released soon]
* Additional access levels, ie: cofounders, autovoice, etc. [we don't plan
on doing anything like this]
* Extended AOp/SOp/AKICK information, ie: date/time placed, reason,
date/time used, added by, etc. [this is on our to-do list also]
* Releasing of services code/binaries [I think we've pretty much just
covered this one in its entirety last week]
Again, in this initial stage of gathering ideas, let's try to keep things
organized and replies to a minimum. There will plenty of time for
discussion if a suggestion seems possible to add.

As was announced a few weeks ago, we've been working on giving users the
ability to request their own passwords with the SENDPASS command. This
command has been finished is is available for your use.
The command is issued as follows: /msg NickServ@services.dal.net SENDPASS
or /msg ChanServ@services.dal.net SENDPASS
<#channel> . The email address provided on the command line
must match the email address on file for the nickname (or for the channel
founders' nickname) or the sendpass will fail.
User SENDPASS is not allowed if the user has turned the MAILBLOCK feature
ON. The MAILBLOCK feature is turned on with /msg NickServ@services.dal.net
SET MAILBLOCK ON or /msg ChanServ@services.dal.net SET <#channel> MAILBLOCK
ON. These work independently of each other. If MAILBLOCK for a channel
itself is OFF and MAILBLOCK for the founders' nickname is ON, a channel
SENDPASS will succeed, but a nickname SENDPASS will fail. If MAILBLOCK for
a channel is ON and MAILBLOCK for a founders' nickname is OFF, a channel
SENDPASS will fail, but a nickname SENDPASS will succeed.
Enjoy!

X-DALnet-List: dalnet-services
Greetings All,
Ive been watching the list as always and noticed people asking: Why cant I
get on DALnet?, Why are some servers so slooow?, Am I in the servers ignore
list or something?, Whats going on?, WHATS HAPPENING !!?, Who ate the LAST
block of CHOCOLATE !?!!? (oh..thats just me nm ;-)
First a few warning and notes.
Warning: This is a LONG post and I do apologise but youve all been asking
and Im doing my best to answer alot of questions in one post and also
Explain whats going on to the best of *my* knowledge and to add my own
options into the mixing bot.
Note: Im not part of DALnet Administration, I am a very avid User of DALnet
Ive been online since early 2000 and as Im somewhat addicted Im online for
12 hours a day minium heh we wont go into my records for online time here
LMFAO *grin* lets just stick with Avid user. heh heh. To anyone that does
read to the End - THANK YOU !! If Ive made an Errors please DO correct me
:-)
So heres the answer to all of those questions asked above (bar the last
*grin*)
DALnet's Server are under attack from "hackers" who are packeting the
Servers. The Attacks come in the form of DDoS (Distributed Denial of
Service) What does that mean? Well, basically alot of garbage is being
thrown at the Servers and the ISPs that host them this "garbage" or data is
more then the Servers can handle and either Lags the absolute HELL out of
them making them slow to use OR makes them split from the other Servers on
DALnet.
You can read a what I found to be a *very* informative document written by
the Admin of lineone.* here:
http://x71.deja.com/=dnc/[ST_rn=ps]/getdoc.xp?AN=709005734&CONTEXT=97794021 4.1062469639&hitnum=0
(Just copy and paste it all into your browser of choice :)
The attacks on the DALnet Servers is bad but when you consider that
it not only effects the say 70K+ Users of DALnet BUT also the MILLIONS of
Users of the ISPs that host the these Servers for DALnet (remembering that
DALnet is a FREE chat medium we do *not* pay for it and that the Hardware
used and the Bandwith is all DONATED) then it shows that a small group of
childish idiots who belive that they can do anything they like and still be
allowed to go out and play afterwards can *really* cause problems that not
only make things bad for the users of DALnet but also those Millions of
Users of the various ISPs who host those Servers. DDoS'ing the ISPs is
CO$TING them ALOT of MONEY in losses their customers *are* not happy with
their ISP being slow to use all of a sudden.
DALnet is working together with The FBI and other Law Enforment Agenices
WorldWide to track down and Arrest the people responsable for these Attacks
on DALnet's Servers - There has been some Arrests as can be read about
(doesnt specifically mention DALnet) in this link that was posted Previously
by MirclMax but here it is again
http://www.globes.co.il/serveEN/globes/docView.asp?did=461297&fid=947
Lets hope there are more arrests soon.
When will it stop? Thats the Million $$$ question. People are still DDoS'ing
DALnet, people have been Arrested and DALnet is working with the FBI and
other Law Enforcement Groups worldwide to Arrest others - They *are* working
on it - New Servers are Linking soon that will take some of the load off the
existing ones so that will make Lag less at least (hopefully) and make it
easier to get online as alot of the Servers have been FULL since Splitrock.*
delinked (it was a major Server one of the Biggest and all the ppl that used
it now have to use others and this is putting ALOT of extra load on the
other Servers)
Hopefully the idiots who are DDoS'ing DALnet will get sick of it or all be
arrested soon - No one can give an answer for *when* cause NO one *knows*
DALnet is doing stuff on their end and with their ISPs who host them to
filter data too them hence lessen the damage from the Attacks ....things
will get *better* but they wont BE better till its all over. Lets all just
hope its SOON and hang in there, DALnet *is* a good network lets just wait
through this crap and come out the other side.
The current situation.
DALnet has had a few Servers Delink (For one: Splitrock.*) and others maybe
going (twisted.*) so with the increased load on the servers as Splitrock.*
used to b able to hold a good 20,00 clients those users shared amongst the
other Servers now makes it harder for us all to get connected as the
remaining Servers are full and also sometimes slow due to this extra load on
them.
Currently the best Servers to use seem to be
nexgo.dal.net
philly.pa.us.dal.net
sniper.dal.net
twisted.dal.net (yes it gets lag BUT it *does* get you online)
tsunami.ma.us.dal.net (Its *Very* New Its Fast)
Also dont just use the default ports to connect(6667)ports 6667-7001 are
Open on most servers so try them too use
For Example use /server nexgo.dal.net 6669 or
/server philly.dal.net 7000
Using Different Ports *can* get you connected :-)
So Try the Different Servers and Ports (6667-7001) it makes it Easier to get
on - Keep trying on a Server that seems fast but says "Server is Full" cuz
if someone d/c from it it means You can get on so if not having luck
elsewhere (Getting Connection Time Outs etc) keep on Trying and you *might*
just be lucky ;-)
Someone suggested that DALnet should contact Admins of Servers they turned
down for Linking, and then there was a lil debate about the "Security" of
doing that and how the new Opers might run around crazily....heh *has
visions of the Choas - chicken - no head - running* heh heh.
Well IF DALnet *did* turn down Linking Applications souly based upon "We
already have a Server in that state" and perhaps some
HardWare/SoftWare/BandWith issues if those arent SERVERE issues then I Also
belive its time for the EB to look at rethinking that and contacting those
Admins and asking them if they are still interested in Linking to DALnet
(Perhaps on a Temporary basis if *really* nessacary) and NO people dont
worry its not a massive Securtity risk not all IRCops can use getpass only
CSop or Higher I belive so the ICCops on the Servers wont be able to "steal"
your passwords or channels which wouldnt happen if DALnet Administration
only found issues with the Servers Location etc at time of linking
Application.
Ok this has been a *very* long post - Thanks to Anyone and Everyone who sit
through it to this point I hope I cleared up some questions and helped a
little with it all.

Changes to Services @DALnet
Updated: November 5, 2000
After the long outage of services yesterday, DALnet
announced changes that impact the way you communicate with SERVICES.
ChanServ, MemoServ, and NickServ are now handled differently than
the common practice to this point. I have posted two emails from
DALnet to give you the updated information. Here is a simple but
effective alias that works if you want to shorten your entry:
/id /msg NickServ@services.dal.net identify $me $$?="Enter Password"
Using this if you type "/id<enter>" then it will
pop up a window prompting you for your password.
Note also if you try to ping chanserv you must use the same chanserv@services.dal.net
format.
First this one:
From: "Ryan Smith" <xpsycho@DAL.NET>

Effective immediately, all users are required to use one of the 'secure'
methods of /msg'ing services. Users will no longer be able to simply /msg
NickServ, /msg ChanServ, or /msg MemoServ. A warning message telling them
they need to use /msg @services.dal.net will be displayed. This is
in an effort to thwart the recent services impersonators that are grabbing
passwords from unsuspecting users. Users *must* use one of the following
methods of speaking to services:
/msg nickserv@services.dal.net <command>
/msg chanserv@services.dal.net <command>
/msg memoserv@services.dal.net <command>
And for those clients that support the direct ircd commands:
/nickserv <command>
/chanserv <command>
/memoserv <command>
/identify <nickname> <password>
/identify <#channel> <password>
All of the help files and services notices have been updated accordingly.
This is a mandatory change, you will no longer be able to use the 'simple'
/msg commands.
As much as I hate any kind of auto-identify scripts, please make sure you
update them accordingly if you use them. For more information, please visit
http://www.dal.net/services.

A few points after reading the mountain of emails here ...
(1) Will people still be tricked into giving away their passwords?
Possibly ... we can only go so far in preventing this, the rest of the
burden is on the users themselves. However, I am confident that this change
will drastically reduce the amount of passwords these impersonators get.
Those that are still tricked will hopefully learn when they get a nick or
channel stolen this way. I don't say that to be harsh, but it's the truth.
We can only go so far to help educate users.
(2) When I mentioned 'secure', I wasn't talking about private messages
being secure. Your password is still transmitted over the Internet in plain
text. The security comes in the fact that an impersonator would have to be
using the server services.dal.net in order to get you to send your password
to them (assuming you understand you must append an @services.dal.net to the
recipient in your /msg command).
(3) The /msg @services.dal.net method was chosen over /
because it is the most widely accepted. If we were in fact catering to mIRC
users, we probably could have just said 'use /nickserv instead of /msg
nickserv' and thus render all those clients that don't support that method
useless also. Unfortunately since all users can't just type /nickserv, we
had to use the long /msg nickserv@services.dal.net method as the suggested
syntax.
(4) Could we, and should we, have done this in steps instead of a drastic
changeover? Yes, in hindsight that probably would have been the most
logical solution. Bots need to be changed, scripts need to be altered, etc.
In a perfect world, people would have been using these commands a long time
ago and this wouldn't be such a big deal. Nevertheless, I jumped the gun a
little here, but it is something we should have done a long time ago.

[Note: This e-mail is being crossed posted on the dalnet@dal.net as well as the dalnet-services@dal.net. Please send any/all followup discussions SOLELY to the dalnet-services@dal.net list. dalnet@dal.net is included merely for notification purposes]
First off, yes we are aware that Services has been a little flaky recently. It is being looked into. The good news is that new code is being introduced and hopefully we'll have some nice improvements for you all soon. Please bare with us.
***************************************************************************
Nickname/Channel expire times have been moved up to 30 days (they were previously at 20). This has nothing to do with the recent downtime. We have no plans of bringing it back down to twenty.Enjoy the extra time.
****************************************************************************
Now for the really important stuff:
Those of you on dalnet-services@ know we have discussed this issue quite a bit. And I assure you that you were all listened to. But of course you can't please everyone all the time ... That being said:
As of October 31st, 2000 all registered nicknames must have an e-mail address set. Those that do not will automatically expire. There will be no "grandfathering". Those of you who have registered your nickname after we introduced the email address feature, are already taken care of. Those of you who did so before will need to use the "/nickserv set email [address]" command. Please read "/nickserv help set email" for more information on that. If any of this is confusing to you, the staff of #DALnetHelp should be able to answer your questions.
Two issues on this before the replies come in:
Once again, DALnet will never sell your e-mail address. It will be kept in the strictest of confidence. Please read: http://www.dal.net/emailinfo.html for more information on that.
For those of you who really object about giving out your personal e-mail address. There are plenty of free web-based e-mail systems that you can use for this purpose. Of course if you ever plan on getting your password sent to you, make sure you can always access that account.

Thankyou Note from Ladyk^
August 11, 1998
TO: ALL my friends and companions from 40single
Thank you all for the wonderful cards, letters, messages, email,
thoughts and prayers!! I have been touched, and even overwhelmed,
by all the warmth, kind wishes, and love that i've received in the
past month and a half. I'm very grateful to you all, as well as
my doctors, nurses and therapists - without the help you've given
me i honestly don't think i would have made it!! (I've recently
learned of all the folks in the U.S. who have had the same problems;
i am one of two to have survived. Thank you and thank God!!) I know
i haven't spent as much time online since i've been home as i used
to - between keeping Mom&Dad busy, doing my physical therapy, and
just plain playing catch-up (bills, letters, etc, etc, etc) i haven't
had much "free" time to do the things i enjoy - like chatting with
y'all. Hopefully once i'm up to speed again i will be back to my
old online-all-the-time self! Thanks again - i've missed you!!
