#40single FAQ
Click here if you are trapped in someone's
frame
First a note about Ops and
their relationship with each other and #40single. The Ops on #40single
are expected to support these guidelines and to support each other in
channel. If there is any question about an action taken by an Op, please
take it up with that Op in private, not in open channel. If there is any
doubt about an action, whether it is a kick/ban or otherwise, please error
on the side of support for your fellow Ops. If there needs to be a corrective
action, as in an accidental kick or ban, or if , for example a newbie
is in the "bad channels", take a moment to ask him to leave those channels.
If he/she does, they should be welcomed back with a brief explaination
of our feelings about them. We can all benifit from a small dose of understanding
and tolerance.
The guidelines for #40single
are general in nature. We have no desire to treat our folks as children
or to create a "police state" environment. We do have a few standards
that we expect to be upheld on #40single. Repeated violation of any of
these standards will be considered grounds for permanent ejection from
the channel.
EvilChime once said: "This
channel was created as a 'safe haven' for folks to enjoy themselves without
worry about offensive behavior"... That statement is the foundation
for our guidelines.
* We do not condone any form
of patently offensive behavior *
Maintaining the integrity
of the channel is the responsibility of ALL its members. It is
the responsibility of the ops to preserve the standards on the channel
as they are outlined here. They make the channel what it is and how it
appears to the new people joining the channel. We all want #40single to
live up to the phrase "clean and friendly" that we so often advertise
in our topic.

If you think of other topics
that you feel that should be covered here, please suggest them to sparkey.
Only REGISTERED nicks will be
kept on the AOPs list. This list is reviewed often and if your nick expires,
it will be removed from the AOPs list automatically by services. This is
not a channel setting but a default on DALnet. Nickserv expires nicks that
have not been identified within the last 30 days (as of October 2000).
Identify to your nick to get your ops automatically and preserve your nick.
As an Auto Op you will be
oped by chanserv whenever you enter the channel. Some of you have provided
chanserv additional addresses to be considered valid for you in your ACCESS
list. This list is in nickserv and is linked to your nick. There have
been numerous problems in many channels lately relating directly to ACCESS
list problems. Although it makes it easier on you, by not requiring you
to "Identify" as often, you also make it easier for someone to pirate
your nick when you have entries in your ACCESS list. Our recommendation
is that you keep your access list clean by deleting all entries in it
and identify when asked to do so by nickserv. If this seems like a lot
of trouble, you might want to use an alias or a popup to identify with
(see the "Tech Stuff" link).
If you want more information on nickserv and the ACCESS list, use the
command: /nickserv help access or, click on NICKSERV in the index
to the left. You are the only one responsible for your ACCESS list and
anyone oped using your address. Occurences of others using your address
and being oped will prompt swift removal of your nick from the AOPs list.
If you are an op in the channel
and don't recognize someone that is opped by chanserv, you can check to
see why they are opped by using this command: /chanserv why #40single
nick and look for the reply in status. Use the appropriate nick. This
will tell you why that person is opped. If you find it is someone getting
opped because of someone else's ACCESS list, deop them immediately and
contact one of the sops or the founder to have that person removed from
the AOP list. Always be sure to log these situations. Back
to the top.
The question asked so often is:
"What is our position on channels that a person
is in when he joins #40single?" The
immediate ejection of someone from #40single is ENCOURAGED if that person
is in channels that are obviously kiddie porn/sex, animal
porn/sex, and any form of violence. This is intended to cover
teen sex channels, mother/daughter, father/daughter, mother/son, father/son,
family sex/porn, and any form of animal/human sexual behaviour. Rape
is considered to be one of the worst kinds of violence. Many women consider
feminine humiliation as violence and we will support that stand. Just because
a channel name has the word "sex" in it does not mean you should
kick someone. Channel names like these are not channel names that should
elicit an automatic kick: #MySexLife, #3waySex, #SexEducation, etc. Let's
use a little common sense when we look at these things.. Back
to the top.
Vulgarity, profanity, harrassment,
intentional hurtful statements, and indecent language will be considered
cause for dismissal from the channel. Ops should not hesitate to warn anyone
violating this guideline. A repeat violation should be considered "cause"
and ejection (kick) is prudent. Do NOT post private messages to the channel.
Your private messages should remain private and do not belong in public.
Calling someone a derogatory name
might be amusing to you and even to the other person, but it might well
be misconstrued or be offensive to others in channel. Unkind, or
derogatory references to race, religion, ethnic background, sexual
orientation, or physical attributes or abilities will not be tolerated.
This will be considered to include all the slang terms as well as specific
terms as well as "Bashing", both female AND male.
If you have any question about whether a term is proper or not, it must
pass the "unkind and derogatory" test in context. The use of slang references
to demean anyone will be considered a violation or these guidelines. Simply
taking a word out of context will not automatically be considered as evidence
that someone is violating these guidelines. Back to
the top.
Everyone that is acting in the
position of a channel operator (has ops) is encouraged to LOG the channel
and LOG the status window. Turn logging on by typing the command /log
on and it will log the current window.Logging provides a documented
record if there is any question of the activity in the channel. Remember
too, that logging private chats can help prevent any misunderstandings later.
That applies to EVERYONE. It is recommended that the Channel Ops keep an
eye on the status window. Many useful things appear there including notices
from Nickserv, Chanserv, the IRC ops, and, if you have "auto whois on join"
(see the "Useful Stuff"
link) in your remotes, you will get a whois on everyone that joins the channel.
Clearing your log often is ok but log files generally don't generally become
huge since they are simple text files. Also, if there is any reason to believe
that an activity in the channel will be questioned, save the log (rename
it and save it). Logs that are expected to be used to prove abuse of guidelines
must be the entire log from sign on to sign off, showing dates and times.
Accusations that are not accompanied by logs or other documentation will
carry little weight. Logs may be compared to authenticate claims. Back
to the top.
Ops is NOT a social
thing. Ops should be given to well known, responsible individuals. The
channel Ops are responsible for the management of the channel. They are
given the ability to take care of the channel and keep it within the guidelines
we all want to preserve. Ops should be known amongst the ops group. Do
not op someone just because they are your friend or because they have
ops on another channel. Guidelines for this channel may not be the same
as those for another channel. Do not op someone that is in many other
channels. People that are in many channels can't be paying much attention
to any of them.
Newbies
and strangers should NEVER be opped.
Do NOT op somone so THEY
can kick someone that is bothering them! If someone in channel is being
bothered in private, ask them to handle it in private. Remind them that
they can ignore the offender. Should someone be a problem to the channel
in general, boot them.
If you don't know someone,
don't op them. If in doubt, don't op. Anyone that has been given ops
that is NOT an AOP and is idle for an extended period should be de-oped.
SOPs - Adding someone
to the AOPs list should be done with the agreement of two or more SOPs
and that person should be recognized as a responsible op candidate by
their fellow ops. Please remind anyone desiring to be an AOP that spending
their time in many channels, especially as op, leaves little time to pay
attention in #40single. This is a negative incentive. AOPs for social
reasons is not responsible or acceptable. Back to
the top.
Any time we have more Ops on the
channel than we have non ops, it can be intimidating to folks that join
the channel. As an AOP, you can improve that situation. De op yourself and
enjoy the channel while still maintaining the ability to have ops. A simple
command to Chanserv
will get your ops back.
That command is: /chanserv op #40single yournickhere
Anytime you are setting yourself away, or you are going to be away from
the computer for any extended length of time, you should de op youself so
others will not think you are "watching the channel". Back
to the top.
When you find it necessary to
set a ban, you should take moment to consider what you are doing. It is
always prudent to set a general ban first. A general ban will ban everyone
at a particular Internet Service Provider (ISP) with the address of the
one you are banning. Example: You are banning some pervert with the nick
of "perveted1" and his address is daperv@mile4.concentric.net ... Your first
ban should be placed on *!*@mile4.concentric.net ... You will find that
this is most helpful if you are being invaded by some perv using many different
nicks. One ban will be effective enough to get all his nicks so all you
have to do is kick each nick. Once you have the bad guy off the channel,
you can then place a specific ban so he can't just dial back into his ISP
and come right back into the channel. That ban takes the form:
*!*daperv@*.concentric.net ... which bans his ID at any address using any
nick. General bans like *!*@*.concentric.net should be lifted as soon as
possible, as it bans everyone at "concentric.net". Note that if
the ID contained in the perv's address were longer than 7 characters it
is good practice to trim the front of the ID like this: The ID is
"iamdaperv@mile4.concentric.net". In this case, a proper specific
ban would be "*!*aperv@*.concentric.net". The form of the ban
as typed is "/mode #40single +b *!*aperv@*.concentric.net". Back
to the top.
Bots are
NOT welcome on #40single. Any time you can identify a bot that's
joined... ban and kick it. Bots are scripts or programs running on a computer
and they can be helpful in administering a busy channel or they can be
malicious. Most of the Bots that are out there which DON'T belong to a
particular channel are malicious. Many bots grab nicks and email addresses
and pass them outside a channel for spammers, or mass advertisers and
inviters. Others are used by malicious folks to raid a channel. BAN them
all!
Lurkers are nicks that join
and never say anything. Anyone should be given a little time to watch
and see if they like what they see... but if they don't talk in channel,
or are in many other channels and don't speak, escort them out. Someone
that joins and doesn't have much to say is different. We all get distracted
or tied up from time to time. Just keep an eye on them ;) ... A channel
regular that is idle for long periods of time are not a threat and aren't
considered lurkers. Anyone that has been given ops that is NOT an
AOP and is idle for an extended period should be de-oped. Back
to the top.
Many people on IRC prefer to be
known by their nick rather than by their real name. I am one of those people.
Be sure that you don't call someone by their name in channel when they would
prefer using their nick. To be safe, it is always better to use only nicks
in channel. The use of names off channel is a personal preference. Let's
respect those that don't care for all the strangers knowing, much less using
their names. Never assume just because someone has a name listed in their
"whois" that they want you to use it or, in the case of some, that they
even realize it is there. Also do not assume that just because it appears
that the name is "real" that it is. Many choose to place a totally
bogus name in their IRC client. Foul nicks don't fly (pun intended). Seriously,
let's don't use nicks that contain any of those words we don't care for
in the "language". Also, nicks containing such as "slut",
"ass", "prick" etc are unacceptable. Folks using them
should be asked to change them. Folks with ops will lose ops if they use
such nicks. Back to the top.
From time to time we find children
joining our channel. Those children that join the channel usually leave
quickly. When we identify one of the youngsters that have joined the channel,
we should alert the rest of the people in channel, then attempt to communicate
with him/her and encourage them nicely to leave the channel. This is an
adult channel and they will be better served on other channels. These children
should be treated with respect and you should be aware that from time to
time children of our regulars find their way to #40single one way or another.
Our own children are welcome and we should be aware that they may
come to the channel looking for one of their parents or for help. Try to
be as helpful as possible in these cases. Back to the
top.
Popups, macros, and WAVs are permitted
in channel. We encourage folks to use them with discretion. Please be mindful
of the chat in the channel and not make it difficult to maintain that flow
because of the popups or macros.
Everyone enjoys a WAV or an
MP3 every now and then. Some of the WAVs that are enjoyed may be less
desirable or even totally disliked by others. It is obvious that deleting
the wav will rid oneself of the WAV itself, but we feel that the names
of WAVs should pass the "offensive" test. Therefore, we must insist that
WAVs which have titles that are offensive not be played in #40single.
When playing WAVs, it isn't necessary or desirable to repeatedly tell
everyone in channel how to retrieve your WAVs. The simple sending of a
sound command will not disrupt the flow of conversation and will accomplish
the playing. The same thing is true of MP3s. WAVGET and other programs
designed to play MP#s have the option to turn the advertising and file
information off. All of that excess just takes up chat space and really
gets in the way more than does good. If someone is interested in the WAV,
most already know how to either ask for it or utilize the "get". Back
to the top.
Auto greets are frowned upon.
They are not only impersonal, but are, in many cases, when run by those
that are not regulars on the channel, contrary to what we would like to
portray to anyone joining #40single. Remotes used for doing anything automatically
in channel, kicks, bans, or anything else are discouraged as they have been
known to cause more trouble than they prevent. The best monitor for the
channel is a good op(s). Protection scripts are, for the most part, not
necessary on DALnet. The use of protection scripts should be minamized to
the point they don't get in the way of routine channel activity. Back
to the top.
Kicking someone for fun may appear
like fun on the surface but to others in the channel it can appear as a
very unfriendly way of treating someone. Kicks for fun are discouraged when
there are any people in channel that are not VERY REGULAR and you are positive
they will not become offended by such things. Kicking for entertainment
should be avoided. Back to the top.
Services abuse of any kind will
not be tolerated and can reserve you a spot on the akick list. Services
abuse will be considered any of the following but not limited to: Mass inviting;
mass advertising; nick impersonation; dodging/evading a ban in any manner;
flooding; multiple clones; loss of service attacks of any kind; channel
takeovers, attempted or otherwise. Logs must accompany any claims that someone
was abusing. Back to the top.
