AOL
Banned from DALnet!

The following came from alt.irc.dalnet dated 11/29/1999 and posted by LadyMorgaine. LadyMorgaine is an IRC Operator - Server Administrator on DALnet. Please read the whole thing. Have your AOL friends complain to AOL about not handling problems with their users that are causing problems on DALnet.

I'm not so sure why you think that they operate with anyone's
blessings, but let me see if I can make the issue a little muddier.

Pedophile:

1. Freedom of speech, grants people the *right* to talk about
anything they want.
2. DALnet won't restrict them from talking about whatever they want.
3. No one blesses them, but it's that freedom of speech thing again.
4. Picture trading is an entirely different matter.
5. DALnet works closely with law enforcement agencies to close down
the picture traders at the source.
6. For every Pre teen picture channel we close, 6 more pop up right
behind it.
7. It's much more effective to work with law enforcement and put
these people behind bars.
8. Putting AOL abusers behind bars, is not an option.

AOL ban:.

1. AOL refuses to deal with abuse complaints
2. Abuse by means of spamming, mass inviting and cloning, is not
considered free speech.
3. No one blesses that either
4. This has nothing to do with picture trading of pre-teen children
5. There are no #aol-pre-teen-picture-trading channels to close
6. It *should* be much more effective to deal directly with AOL
adminstrators to have accounts disabled and users warned.
7. We can't put you in jail for spamming and cloning, although, we'd
like to at times.

I'm not sure where everyone gets the idea that it is their God given
right (sorry Susan30) to connect to DALnet, Undernet, EFnet, StarChat,
ArabChat, aIRCD.net or any of the rest of them. It's not. Each of
these is a private entity and can deny you or anyone else, access for
any reason they choose. However, when access is denied, we all try to
make sure there's a valid reason for it.

Obviously, some of you have not been around DALnet as long as I have.
Here's a brief history lesson, get your pens and paper out, there's
going to be a test.

3 years ago, we autokilled AOL, yes all of it. Why? For the same
reason that I did it 5 days ago. Who knows what happened when we did
this? Anyone? (hush Watchman and Rakarra).

Yes, that's right, AOL linked a server. That's where ans.* came from.
What happened to ans.*? It was delinked, because the staff was
non-existant, and there were some other routing and coding issues,
uhm, like, they wouldn't update their IRCD and stuff. Did this help
them to deal with the abuse issues then? Nope, but at the time, it
placated DALnet, and everyone was happy. Linking a server again, is
not my domain, however, if they do that, and still don't deal with the
abuse issues, they'll get autokilled again. What?! You mean linking
a server doesn't promise that your host/domain won't get akilled?
Nope, not any more it doesn't. When Defiant.* was linked, it's host
wouldn't deal with abuse issues either (2 years ago), and I akilled
it. After the host got all done being mad, and calling me every name
in the book, including clueless, they dealt with the abuse problem,
and that was never repeated with them. What about *.tm.net.my you
say? They have a server linked, why aren't they akilled? They got
the threat of akill, the same time I sent one to *.jaring.my, trust
me, *.tm.net.my knew I wasn't joking, server or no server. We have a
direct contact with *.tm.net that deals with abuse complaints within
48 hours, and sends us feedback on the disposition of the complaint.

Wow!

I have nothing personal against AOL users, or against AOL, this has
nothing to do with that. This has to do with responding to abuse
complaints. This isn't a difficult concept people. If other big
ISP's around the world can comply, why can't AOL?

Pop Quiz!

Has AOL ever been akilled before on DALnet?
